For over a decade, I’ve been passionately devoted to figurative art, working primarily with the human form as my subject.
Since 2018, I have focused on sumi ink life drawing. My practice has centred around developing a distinctive style that blends Japanese calligraphic brushwork with representational figure drawing.
I offer personalised commissions in this style that captures your individuality. These unique, loosely-rendered portraits are created during a private life drawing session, where you will pose for me as I paint. It adds a meaningful layer of experience to the piece that you’ll remember forever.
I travel for commissions, and I have options for people anywhere in the world. If we’re unable to meet in person, we can organise an online life drawing session. Or you can provide me with photos to work from, which is particularly good for capturing those special times gone by.
My process involves doing many paintings in a session, so you’ll get several options to choose from. I take great pride in working with each individual to create a piece that resonates with them.
Pregnancy portraits and anniversary gifts are popular commissions. Let me know if you have an important date and I’ll work with you to make it happen by then.
Spaces for commissions are limited, so I encourage you to reach out to reserve your spot and explore the possibilities for creating a truly special piece with me.
Book: 101 Contemporary Waikato Artists, Peter Dornauf, Dominique Marriott, pp. 146–47,published May 2024 by The Friends of the Waikato Museum, Hamilton, New Zealand
Creative Matters Podcast, 7 April 2024, Season 6,Episode 115
Dominique Marriott is an artist based near Raglan in Waikato, New Zealand, who specialises in life drawing. Her strength lies in distilling the human form into its most essential elements. Known for her minimalistic nude paintings created using sumi ink and calligraphy brushes, she approaches her subjects with an uninhibited boldness that captures the raw energy and innate beauty of the body. Her work reflects an appreciation for simplicity.
Influenced by Zen principles, Dominique approaches her artistic process as a form of active meditation. She nurtures a mindset free from judgement and attachment while painting to achieve full concentration in the moment.
Dominique discovered her artistic passion in her final year of school. After moving to New Zealand in 2005, she continued her creative journey with a Foundation Certificate at Whitecliffe College (2007), later earning a Bachelor of Visual Arts from Unitec (2015) and training in Japanese calligraphy. Her art seamlessly blends Eastern and Western influences, embodying the lively brushstrokes of Japanese calligraphy with figure painting. Her work serves as a vehicle for exploring and embracing Eastern philosophy.
Dominique’s painting process is rapid and intensive, resulting in many paintings being made in a single session. Her selection process is slow and contemplative where only a few are considered as final pieces. Her energetic workflow has gained attention, leading to a captivating performance-based exhibition, painting live in front of an audience with a nude model present.
Dominique exhibits in galleries alongside working on commissions. Her work is held in private collections around the world.
